In this third of four videos, I’m brutally honest. You can’t say that you are a musician if you don’t know at least some of the things musicians know. That is just logical. With a little knowledge about notes, bars and song structure we can teach more effectively and communicate more clearly. In this video I also quickly explain how to count 1/4 notes, 1/8 notes and 1/16 notes.

Final video, including an offer for Tap Academy Online, coming in two days!
Spot on, Steve!
I begin each tap class (children, teens, adults) with everyone clapping 1/4 notes, 1/8 notes (straight & swing), 1/16 notes, triplets. It’s my ritual to begin each class, connecting dancers to each other, connecting dancers to the music, (and if we’re lucky to have actual musicians in the room) connecting musicians to dancers.
Sometimes I begin with some listening and basic “step heel” or “dig brush step heel” with different notes, too. Then we circle back and do shuffles, flaps, etc. . . I find, for some classes, that taking a moment to remember to listen changes everything. We DO have a lot of stuff in common! Steve
